Increase web traffic by diversion setups on Facebook

So how and why would you use facebook as a way to increase web traffic? In the age of Web 2.0, facebook has become the new buzz in social networking. It is the fastest growing social network site, growing at such a rate that the dominance Myspace once held will soon deteriorate. Facebook is eating into the gap at a rapid rate and is not a matter of if but when.

Facebook users can choose to join one or more networks, organized by city, workplace, school, and region. These networks help users connect with members of the same network. Users can also connect with friends, giving them access to their friends’ profiles.

The website is free to users, and generates revenue from advertising, including banner ads. Users create profiles that often contain photos and lists of personal interests, exchange private or public messages, and join groups of friends. The viewing of detailed profile data is restricted to users from the same network or confirmed friends.

I personally love facebook. Considering alot of my time is spent on the facebook, it made alot of sense that since i allocate time to facebook, that i also use it to increase my web traffic .

I have joined many groups, added friends that had similar interests and created my own groups. I have found facebook an excellent source of targeted traffic. The key to web traffic is putting yourself in proximity to your audience, and with facebook, you have the ability to get close to your target audience

Before i go on i must add it is against facebook rules to use their site for any commercial purpose. So I advise against direct promotion of products. But you can certainly direct them to your blog, forum, articles etc.

The basis of the strategy is that we are going to leave comments using one of 4 methods and we’ll use our signature line or make reference to our our web address. So here are your four steps to diverting web traffic from facebook

Step 1 - Start a profile

If you haven’t got a facebook profile you will need one to be able to undertake this strategy that i will outline. Click here to join

Step 2 - Add friends and organise your friend lists

Now its time to add friends. First things first, gather your list of relevant keywords, type the keyword into the search field. Your results will be organised it into 6 categories:

  • All results
  • People
  • Pages
  • Groups
  • Events
  • Applications

You can also narrow down the results to your local network, state or country. This is dependant on the type of reach you are wanting to achieve with your promotion

When results are done I personally use the people and groups categories to find my friends. If you are going to add people using the people tab results, then you simply click on add friends. I also personally like to add a message so that people know the purpose of why I am adding them as a friend. Be honest, and if you have a blog tell them you have an informational site that you would like to share at no cost. That way they can decide whether they want to receive information from you or not

Also, organise your friend list into groups of 20, reason being facebook does not let you mail more than 20 people at one go. So click on ‘add friend to list’ to better organise your friends list

For a faster way to add friends, then click on the group tab, and then click on a group that is relevant and then add friends. Just beware though, when it comes to adding friends in groups, add three users per results page. If you add too many people in sequence in one go, the facebook spam algorithm will boot you off the system and ban you temporarily

Also, use the “People you may know” tool which is on the right hand sidebar, half way down. These are friends that based on sophisticated algorithm on your profile, and your friends friends, will recommend friends for you. No worries about facebook spam algorithm, add them all

Step 3 - Read post on the different angles to take on commenting. Click here

Step 4 - Choose one of four ways that you can promote your site and include your signature line with your link

It is important that you include your signature line or tie in a reference to your link otherwise this strategy won’t work. Here are the different posts you can do to promote your site

  1. Post on your own wall - probably not the most effective method as not everyone gets your message because it is not addressed to anyone
  2. Post on someone else’s wall - Depending on the nature of your business, one on one conversations with someone may be the best way to generate web traffic to your site
  3. Submit a link- facebook has a social bookmarking script built in. You can download a widget for your browser that will allow you to post your site to either individual people, a entire friends list. To submit to a groupor to a group
  4. Discussion Boards - here you can create a discussion in a group and create links to a site. Be prepared to facilitate the discussion so more people visit your discussion
  5. Post to a group wall - To post on a groups wall, you must join the group. Join groups that are relevant to your site and make sure that the site you join has large numbers of people and people are actively participating
  6. Send en email - If you have created friend lists , this is where this can come in handy. You can email certain friend lists or you can mass email everyone on your list. Choice is yours

Step 5 - Optional - Start your own group

We will discuss this another time.. for now follow the steps above and you will soon start seeing web traffic diverted from facebook!

To your success

I have been using Facebook for a while and only recently started using it correctly. I have started doing pretty much what you said, and it is good to know that I’m doing the right things.

I’ve included this post in my International Marketer Review Blog Carnival and stumbled it.

Great info, I do a lot of this myself and think Facebook is a great resource to get your message out there fast. I see a lot of traffic coming to my site from Facebook. So what you say really does work.

Thanks for writing this article. It’s very informative!

I have an account on facebook, but I haven’t really done anything with it.

Now, I can see that I’m missing out on a lot of opportunity.
