Using OBP to increase web traffic - Part IV - del.icio.us

This is the final installment of the OBP series on how to increase web traffic commenting on other people’s blogs. Del.icio.us uses a non-hierarchical keyword categorization system in which users can tag each of their bookmarks with a number of freely chosen keywords (cf. folksonomy). Its collective nature makes it possible to view bookmarks added by similar-minded users.

Del.icio.us has a “hotlist” on its home page and “popular” and “recent” pages, which help to make the website a conveyor of internet memes and trends.

Many features have contributed to making Del.icio.us one of the most popular social bookmarking services. These include the website’s simple interface, human-readable URL scheme, a novel domain name, a simple REST API, and RSS feeds for web syndication.

How to generate web traffic using del.icio.us

Step 1 - Start An Account

If you haven’t got an account already click here. Plain obvious first step i feel silly for even saying it!

Step 2 - Fill out Your profile

This is an important step. When you fill out your profile you want to select the tags that only relate to your website. What i do is have an account specifically for my business interests and another for my personal use. The reason i have seperate accounts is so that the bookmarks i am receiving are specific to my task at hand, which is to find blogs that are relevant that i can comment on.

del.icio.us will then start delivering to your profile a list of sites that have received the highest amount of votes that match your tags

Step 3 - Add some friends

Now this is probably sounding repetitive to those that know how to use del.icio.us.. if you are using del.icio.us then move to the next step. For the benefit of those that aren’t using please read on. The benefit of adding friends is you will find sites that you will probably have never been able to comprehend in your own mind. del.icio.us users post their favorite websites to their profile using either a toolbar button, a link on the sites page or through social posting sites. So again add only people that have similar interests to yours.

How do you find people that have similar interests to yours? You search for them using keywords. I will describe the process below

To search for friends you basically do the same as we do with stumbleupon, use your keyword search relevant to your site .

Once the search results are returned, look for a bookmark that has highlighted pink underneath the heading that says something like “saved by xxx people”. If you have tabbed browsing then right click on your mouse and click on “open in a new tab” so we can come back to the search results page without having to reload it.

Once you clicked on the pink highlighted area it will take you to a page of del.icio.us users that have bookmarked the page. Click on their names and view their content. Remember quality over quantity and you want to get the right people otherwise your feed will overflow with useless websites and you will be sifiting through material that has no relevance. Finally “add xxxxx to your network” which is located in the header on the left

Step 6 - Read my introductory post on this series. Click here

Step 7 - Comment on relevant sites

Now you have three choices to choose when you are looking for sites to comment on. You can either do a keyword search and find sites that have been bookmarked by order of relevance, or you can check what your friends are bookmarking, or you can click on your friends tags to narrow down the search The final decision is yours, so choose the sites that are relevant to yours and comment on them!

To your success
