Using OBP to increase web traffic - Part I - StumbleUpon

I personally want to start with StumbleUpon as it is my favorite website I use to increase web traffic. StumbleUpon is an example of Web 2.0, a social bookmark site. I use Stumbleupon to find roughly 10 quality sites to comment on.

StumbleUpon is a Web browser plugin that allows users to discover and rate Web pages, photos, and videos. Web pages are presented when the user clicks the “Stumble!” button on the browser’s toolbar. StumbleUpon chooses which new Web page to display based on the user’s ratings of previous pages, ratings by his/her friends, and by the ratings of users with similar interests. I.e., it is a recommendation system which uses peer and social-networking principles.

There are many ways to use Stumbleupon as a resource. In future postings, I will introduce how to use it for bookmarking to redirect traffic but today i will talk about how to find blogs to comment on and increase web traffic. Here is how i do it:

Step 1 - Start An Account

If you haven’t got an account already click here. Once you have opened the account make sure you download the toolbar. It is a very important you download the toolbar as you will find it easier to find blogs

Step 2 - Fill out Your profile

This is important. When you fill out your profile you want to select categories that relate to your website. What i do is have an account specifically for my business interests and another for my personal use. That way, when i am stumbling for blogs, my ‘business’ account is all related to my blog. You will find stumbleupon a really useful resource that you will probably open a personal account to

Step 3 - Add some friends

This is a great way to find sites that you will probably have never been able to comprehend in your own mind. Well that certainly has been my experience! ‘Stumblers’ post their favorite websites by giving the thumbs up to sites using their toolbar. So look at what people are rating and add people that have similar if not same interest to yours and your site

How do you find people that have similar interests to yours? You search for them by using relevant keywords related to your site. The search bar is found on the right hand corner of the site. Search results are split into two. The top part are people who have stumbled websites that your keyword matches, and the bottom half are actual sites itself that have relevance to your keyword

Click on a user profile, and check out their favorite ’stumbled’ sites. Determine whether their saved bookmarks is relevant to the niche you are targeting, and add only the right people. Adding the right people will mean you finding more relevant sites to comment on.

When you are done adding friends, you will start receiving their stumbled sites through a feed on your profile. So check your profile once a day for new sites to blog on

Step 5 - Read my introductory post on this series. Click here

Step 6 - Use the Stumble Button on the toolbar

If i had to pick my favorite button on my browser at this moment.. it is the ’stumble’ button.

When you click on the stumble button, based on the categories you have chosen, it will take you to a random website related to your category and user ratings. You will be amazed at the information you find as an aside, and you will find sites that allow you to post your comment

I want to show you a really nifty feature using SU. You can refine the stumble button so that the sites you stumble on are relevant to your site.

Firstly go to www.stumbleupon.com and do a search on a keyword relevant to your site.

Second.. see the button “Stumble pages about this”? Click on that. Now you will get human user rated not artificial algorithm based content that is related to your keyword search.

Repeat the same process for new comments

Step 8 - Comment on relevant sites

Choose the sites that are relevant to yours and comment on them! You can do this two ways… use the stumble button as described in step 5, or check your profile for the feed from other people’s stumbles as described in step 6

Step 9 - Give your commented page a thumbs up!

If you have deemed the site worthy of your comment.. then give it some stumble love by voting for it. Not only will this increase web traffic to the blog, but the more people that visit the site, the more backlinks created and ultimately the more chance your link will get noticed and you will get a flow of visitors to your! site!

To your success
